"Think of this way: a concept is an idea. Our job as designers is to visually explain that idea"

I think this quote from Hillman Curtis (page 57) explains what graphic design is all about.
Designers are always trying to explain this idea that they have in their head, they have it planned it out in a sketch and what they want to eventually do with is develop it as an image. And what they want they want the image/picture to turn out to be is something that conveys the idea.
It all makes sense if you just think about it.
Artist of any kind think visually.
So the one way we (artists) convey the idea is through visually, it is the best way we know how to.
Its as simple as that.

So what is concept?
How can someone call a Pink Floyd album a "concept album"?
Well, what was mostly said from Curtis was that the tracks on the Pink Floyd album were all connected together, they related to each other.
In his words "each one telling a different chapter of the same story. All illustrating a central theme: isolation. Or, more specifically, the building of a psychological wall to keep society away."
So how could one simple music album mean so much?
It is called conceptual thinking.
Conceptual thinking brings everything together, if we didn't think like this about certain things we would have a lot of ideas just boggled around. However, conceptual thinking is (at sometimes) hard to do, it is tricky, but is very important especially to artist to make their message clear.
